MARCH – APRIL NEWSLETTER:

March 1, 2015

Dear Members and Friends,

I’d like to take the opportunity to wish you a happy and healthy Purim and Passover. May the upcoming holidays be filled with peace, happiness and all things good.

We all know the story of Purim which is celebrated this Wednesday March 4, 2015. It’s a tale dating back to the Persian Empire in the 4th century BCE when King Ahasuerus had his wife, Queen Vashti, executed for failing to follow his orders, he orchestrated a beauty pageant to find a new queen. A Jewish girl, Esther, found favor in his eyes and became the new queen—though she refused to divulge the identity of her nationality.

Meanwhile, the anti-Semitic Haman was appointed prime minister of the empire. Mordechai, the leader of the Jews (and Esther’s cousin), defied the king’s orders and refused to bow to Haman. Haman was incensed and convinced the king to issue a decree ordering the extermination of all the Jews on the 13th of Adar—a date chosen by a lottery Haman made (hence the name Purim, "lots").

Mordechai galvanized all the Jews, convincing them to repent, fast and pray to G-d. Meanwhile, Esther asked the king and Haman to join her for a feast. At the feast, Esther revealed to the king her Jewish identity. Haman was hanged, Mordechai was appointed prime minister in his stead, and a new decree was issued granting the Jews the right to defend themselves against their enemies.

On the 13th of Adar, the Jews mobilized and killed many of their enemies. On the 14th of Adar, they rested and celebrated,

Come to the synagogue to hear the whole Megillah and enjoy a festive party on Wednesday, Purim night March 4 at 6 pm. The Megillah, a.k.a. "The Book of Esther," is the scroll that tells the Purim story. On Purim, we emphasize the importance of friendship and community by sending gifts of food to friends and giving charity to the poor.

Passover which celebrates the departure of the Jewish nation from slavery in Egypt begins with the seder on the first night. This year we plan to have a Seder at our synagogue for the first night of Passover. So make your reservations soon and have a Seder with family and friends. Please see flyer for more details.

Passover begins in the evening of Friday, April 3, 2015 and ends in the evening of Saturday, April 11, 2015. There are so many rules which govern Passover I won’t list them all, but Rabbi Eli would be more that happy to fill you and answer any questions you may have.

We will be having a wine tasting event at the Synagogue on March 23rd from 6-8 pm, so that you can get all the wine you need for the holiday and for the rest of the year. Advanced orders are now being accepted. Please call Susan Rothbaum at 860-232-5532 to place your order.

Unfortunately, in the past few months we lost a few of our members. I want to express to the families of Mrs. Naomi Schwartz & Mr. Leo Silberman my deep sorrow for their loss. May they rest in peace and have a proper place in heaven.

One last thing, the nominating committee will be reconvening soon. If interested in any of the synagogue offices please contact our President, Rabbi Edward Cohen.

Have a happy and healthy,

Marty Rothbaum
